VEC Offering School Visits, Facility Tours

October 2, 2019

Johnson, Vt – Is your local school looking for a great guest speaker? Would students in your town be interested in a field trip to learn how electricity gets delivered across northern Vermont?

“Now that the school year has gotten into full swing, we want to remind members that Vermont Electric Co-op staff is available to come speak to students in your community, and also available to give tours of our facility in Johnson,” said Amanda Zay, Senior Human Resource Generalist at VEC.

Options include:

  • A class visit. VEC staff could offer a presentation to a class or classes, about electricity including how it’s generated, how it flows from power stations to our homes, why to conserve electricity, electricity safety, and more. These presentations can be customized to cover specific topics.
  • A VEC facility tour. A visit to VEC headquarters would include a tour of various work areas including our state-of-the-art control center. Individuals would have the opportunity to meet with various VEC employees to learn about VEC business operations and potentially explore careers in the utility industry.
  • A field trip. Stops could include VEC solar arrays, a battery storage facility, a VEC distribution substation, and VEC’s Johnson headquarters.

Importantly, any of these options can be tailored to any grade from K through 12 and emphasize certain educational goals/subjects. For instance, each could focus on electricity generation and transmission, safety, electricity career opportunities, electricity policy, or other themes.

“It is an exciting time to work in the electrical utility industry. We’d love to share our knowledge with young people in our community to raise awareness about interesting career pathways that may influence someone’s course of studies and/or trajectory post high school graduation,” Zay said.
