High winds knock out power to over 11,000 VEC members

Published 12.01.2010
Johnson, VT- High winds that began crossing through the western slopes of the Green Mountains around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday continue and have knocked out power to over 11,000 VEC members. Cambridge, Underhill and Jericho areas have been hit the hardest. In addition members from Hinesburg to Richford are also experiencing outages as a result of high winds, broken poles and downed power lines.

Utilities remain on alert for strong winds until around 8 pm. this evening. VEC anticipates that new outages will occur until around midnight tonight. All available utility crews and contractors are working on the restoration efforts and additional mutual aid crews from New Hampshire are on their way.

“Based on the extensive damage to our system we do expect that members may be without power throughout much of the evening and into Thursday afternoon,” said Jeffrey Wright, Chief Operating Officer. “Members that are part of the smaller outages could be without power into the weekend.”

VEC urges members to stay away from downed power lines as they may still be energized and could cause serious injuries or even death. Call the Coop to report downed lines at 1-800-832-2667.
