Vermont Electric Cooperative, Inc. Retains UVM to do Archeological Assessments

 Published 08/28/2009
Johnson, VT – Vermont Electric Cooperative, Inc. (VEC) has retained the services of the University of Vermont (UVM) to perform archeological assessments required for regulatory approval to proceed with a project to reconstruct 5.5 miles of transmission line in the towns of Derby and Charleston.

"The existing transmission line was constructed in the early 1920’s and must be rebuilt so that VEC can continue to provide reliable service to the area residents,” said Harry Abendroth, Manager of Regulatory and Planning Engineer. “We plan to replace the existing steel lattice towers with single wood pole structures,” added Abendroth.

As part of the needed regulatory approvals for this project, VEC is required to identify the potential existence of archeological resources within the right of way. This work will require limited excavation with hand tools within the right of way. “Areas of disturbed earth will be restored upon completion of work”, said Abendroth. “VEC is requesting that members allow the UVM researchers performing this work access to their properties within the right of way of the transmission line”.
