Osprey Return to Fairfield Swamp to Find a New Home |
Published 04/11/2008 Johnson, VT – Vermont Electric Cooperative, Inc. (VEC) line crews have recently taken steps to protect the ospreys that have taken up residence in Fairfield Swamp. On March 24th, in efforts to prevent the ospreys from harming themselves and disrupting power to nearby Co-op members, protective devices were placed on nearby structures and a new platform was built away from the road. “Our hope was that the ospreys would find the platform appealing and build their nest in a safe place,” said Jeffery Wright, Chief Operating Officer. “We’ve all been keeping an eye on the platform and are happy to report that the osprey returned sometime during the last week.” The pair was recently seen gathering nest building materials and constructing their new nest atop of the platform.
VEC worked with VT Fish and Wildlife Department biologist Tina Scharf in determining the best location for the new platform. Tina was present for the platform construction in March and is very pleased that the ospreys are cooperating with their relocation. Tina believes that the fish populations in the swamp are low enough that we won’t see more osprey pairs in the same area, but if others do decide to make Fairfield Swamp their home, we have a plan to accommodate more of the birds by installing additional platforms.
The osprey was recently removed from Vermont’s list of threatened species. Vermont utilities have played an important part in their successful return. The birds are drawn to open areas with abundant fish supplies and they naturally are drawn to the tops of power poles to build their homes. “Because of their desire to make power poles their home, VEC feels it is important to take steps to safely accommodate their needs,” Wright said. “VEC is very excited that the steps we took resulted in a success story for all.”
